Project Replay

In response to a high-rise development that is to replace the Marx Brothers Playground in east Harlem, our team questioned remaining sites for play in New York City. The sidewalk revealed itself as an underutilized connective surface accessible to all new yorkers. Research on sidewalk ownership and existing jurisdictions for interventions and modifications created project replay— a non-profit organization that aims to bring play back into daily life. Through the reading and misreading of regulation, we propose subverting conventional urban furniture with inventive mutations that allow for community programming such as exhibitions, pop-up events, and workshops. Eventually, the aggregation of such furnitures and complete block shutdowns, we envision a new pedestrian landscape that is recreational, educational, and imaginative.
